Manjit Singh was born in village Bharta near Mahilpur, district Hoshiarpur,
Punjeb, India on 10 march 1950.
He was only 3 months old when his Mom died and left him without any
brother or sister.
His father Amar Singh was in the Indian Army He
was brought up by his grand-mom, Raj Kaur and grandfather Banta Singh.
At the early age he had to go through
many pains and difficulties due to poverty. He had no shoe to wear in
the scorching heat of 40c when going to school about 3 miles everyday.
He had to run from one tree shade to another to avoid the feet being
burnt.
He studied his higher secondary education from
government boys higher secondary school, Mahilpur. he wanted
to go to
collage for further education but had no fee of Rupees 140 to
pay as collage
admission. He worked one month with a tube-well company
to earn Rupees 142. He finished
his BA in economics and english with good marks. He got BA B Ed from
Ramgarhia Collage Phagwara in 1973.
During
School days he started lifting stones for fun and to let his friends
know how strong he was. He carried on this fun during collage in the
form of weightlifting. He became national
champion forweightlifting in 1973 at the age 23. He joined the Indian
Police Force in 1974
when he could not get a Government Teaching job. He worked in the
Police for two years and left the country for the United Kingdom to
get married to his wife Mahinder Kaur.
On 15 January 1977 he landed at Heathrow Airport to see both heavy
snow and his wife first time. He got married on 29th January 1977.
This was the start of his struggle as a household person. He first
worked in the British United shoe machenery on Belgrave Road, Leicester
as an electro plater. He worked there for three years till 1980 and
then went to British shoe corporation where he worked as a stacker
(heavy job) those days he joined Sugar's Gym in Leicester to get
some physique. He did good training in the gym everyone was wondering
to see a small man lifting huge weights. He use to go to work at 6am
till 2pm daily. At 3pm he was going to the Gym for one hour daily.
He worked their till June 1986.
He left his job to start his own business as ladies shoe manufacturing
with the help of lotus shoes and Peter Black. He used to make the
lower parts for the companies and had 7 staff along side his wife
who had four children by 1986, daughter Gulninder Kaur born on the
23rd
February 1978,son Satminder Singh on 4 February 1979, son Jatinder
Singh on 7th March 1983
and last but not least the lovely girl Daljinder Kaur born on 3rd
August 1986.
While looking after his family and business he succeeded to get his
name in the Guinness book
First time doing 1,687 Parallel bar dips in one hour in October 1987.
After this Manjit did not look back and setup 43 world records in
speed and stamina endurances
